Why get involved?


We can make a difference. The film industry is in a great position to lead the way and inspire other areas of business to follow.

A 2009 study estimated that screen production (film and TV) in London alone produces 125,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, about the same as a town of 20,000 people.  And that’s before you take into account emissions from cinemas and from all the other links in the film business chain.  The technology and management systems already exist to drastically reduce those figures.

Odeon cinemas found their overall energy bills dropping as soon as they began to encourage cinema managers to think green.  The main Warner studios in Burbank California reduced their operating costs by $1 million a year when they began to track their use of energy and their production of waste.  The more companies get serious about green issues – auditing their performance, thinking ahead and investing in new systems and technologies, the more money they find they can save.

Even if your company is reluctant to act now, it makes sense to be aware of coming changes in environmental regulation at local, national and European level.  Planning ahead reduces the cost of disruption when new legal Standards are introduced.

All of us contribute to climate change. All of us have a chance to help reduce its impact.

Just like every other industry, the film business faces rising energy and waste disposal costs.

The UK is the first country to introduce legislation to reduce carbon emissions over the long-term.
